Bypassing Citizens United
There’s no question that the Supreme Court ruling in the Citizens United case was a significant setback for Democracy. It said money was speech, and corporations were people, meaning there could be no legal restrictions set on corporate spending on elections. Since then, American Democracy, already in trouble, took a nose-dive.
BUT! There is hope. In Montana, they figured out a way around this ruling. Individual states grant powers to corporations. US law is clear on this. If states decide to grant fewer rights to corporations, they can. So, say they don’t grant the right to spend money influencing elections - then it doesn’t matter if Citizens United says they can exercise this right, if the states didn’t grant this right in the first place.
