Money in Politics

Politicians are bought and sold. Each dollar is like a vote, and some have more votes than others.

It’s Undemocratic

Politicians must raise money to run for office, and once in office they have to spend hours every day raising money to stay in office. The people who pay them influence them. It is the main reason American hasn’t been a democracy for decades.

This money is like votes, and some people have hundreds of millions more votes than you do. It’s why congress doesn’t do what the majority of Americans want - because they do what their rich donors want instead.

This was all made much worse with the Citizens United case, which states against all sense, that corporations are people and money is speech. This means corporations, foreign organizations, and rich people can make unlimited donations to American candidates to work in their interest and not in ours. This case must be overturned, or better yet, amend the constitution to clearly state the contrary.

Many laws have been passed to reform campaign finance, and have all failed to one degree or another. Ultimately, the only solution is to prohibit all donations to political campaigns entirely.
